In a way, the WDCHO is the culmination of a process begun in 1982 with an article by Calvin Hampton that challenged the convention wisdom of what a concert hall organ should be.

The arresting visual element of this iconic instrument was designed in consultation with architect Frank Gehry. The organ was constructed in the shop of Glatter-Götz Organ Builders of Owingen, Germany, with tonal design and finishing by Manuel Rosales of Los Angeles.
